Losing a Blog Audience

It’s one of the worst feelings you could ever face on the Internet.

I started this blog from the ground up last summer 2014. It was so difficult getting noticed and gaining visitors, as I resisted the urge to spam. I contributed to multiple websites and blogged regularly. I was on a roll…really, I was satisfied with the number of likes and/or comments I would receive on each post, even though it wasn’t that much. People were actually reading my posts and engaged in the material. It was amazing!

Then 2 things happened to me: The worst 9-5 job and a sociopathic relationship. These have hindered my ability to see the real world. I was naive and didn’t think about my passions in the long run. Lesson to learn: Don’t let ANYone or ANYthing get in the way of achieving what it is you want. EVER.

Blogging was like therapy. I could share my ideas and experiences freely. The only person limiting me from self-expression is myself. Now after I have hid myself in the shadows for 9+ months, I have become unknown. People forgot about me. It’s like I have to rebuild what I demolished.

If anyone is out there, I am still alive. I will make it imperative to maintain what it is I started.

By the way, I’m afraid my writing skills went downhill.

You never lose your writing hand! I am glad to see you back at it! It is very easy to lose an audience through inactivity or shutting down your blog temporarily, which is what I did twice. Building back up is the hard part and it is definitely a grind! Wishing you the best as you get your feet back into it and I hope this share helps people to reconnect with you! -OM

    1. Thank you for the promotion! It really REALLY means a lot! This was the first time I checked my email inbox to be exploding with notifications from WordPress! ALL THANKS TO YOU! Speaking of losing touch with my writing, this moment right here is motivating me to do more!

      – Much love,

  2. You never, ever lose your writing skills! I get being bummed about losing followers, but sometimes we have to go through adverse experiences. It deepens us as people and learning from the experience only broadens the lessons we can share to help others. Write from your heart and the audience will find it’s way back!

  3. I can relate. Blogging is like therapy for me too, and I take pride in how my blog has grown since I started it just after you started yours. I’ve been able to keep at it and haven’t lost too many followers but I did lose some because a couple of my articles angered some of my followers last spring. I was devastated! I too was in a sociopathic relationship but it was before I started this blog, and in my earliest posts I wrote a lot about that relationship, trying to process what happened to me. I’ve expanded recently and write about almost anything that’s on my mind but at first it was pretty much limited to posts about narcissists and sociopaths/psychopaths. I’m following you now! It shouldn’t take too long to build your audience back up.

    1. Thank you! 🙂 Yeah, sometimes it is hard to satisfy everyone with the things we write. I think it’s best to just express our true opinions because you don’t want your blog to be an impression of who you’re not, you know?

Following my sociopathic relationship, I wanted to jump back to writing about it and warning girls (and rarely, guys), about how to avoid and detect them. I have a lot of drafted posts about it, but then I didn’t really want to go back and read them and be reminded of him. LOL.

But thanks for the follow! I think aopinionatedman really helped revive my blog, so it truly helped!

      1. Opininated Man is great–he helped my blog get started, because he reblogged a very early post of mine when i was getting hardly any views, and that day I couldn’t believe how many followers I got thanks to his help!

  4. Oh, and don’t worry about losing your writing skills. I didn’t write for 20 years and those skills came right back and have even improved. It’s like riding a bike–you never forget how (though I don’t want to try riding a bike at my age lol)

    1. Thank you for the motivation! Consistency is always key! Btw, it did pay off a lot when opinionatedman promoted my blog on his site, so yeah! 😉 With my bigger audience, I’m motivated even more to keep on.

  5. You’re writing skills are still there, just keep at it when you can and they will resurface. I think they already have because I enjoyed your post.

I can relate as well to being involved with someone who completely robs you of your identity/passions. Sounds like you’re on the other side now and coming back. Good for you!

    1. Thank you! I really like it when people enjoy what I write. Part of my New Year’s resolution is to write more, so maybe this consistency will lessen my insecurities about my writing. I’m glad to be on the other side. 🙂

  6. Glad you’re back to blogging, don’t worry about your writing skills. People like blogging to see what you have to share, not necessarily how well you write.
I know how you feel about losing your followers. I moved my blog and lost almost all of mine. I pretty much had to start over from scratch. It’s very frustrating and upsetting, hard to keep going. But, just have to keep going.
    Good luck!

    1. Yes, that’s true! Blogging isn’t English class, but a platform to share our ideas. I’m so sorry to hear about that! It does put a huge kink in your blog when you move to a different blog. I always try to be careful about saving followers — I’d probably go as far as contacting WordPress about restoring them because it is a huge loss for your brand/site.

Thanks for the motivation! I really need that! 🙂

      1. thanks Renee, I did try contacting wordpress, but since I’m now hosted by hostgator (even tho I’m still blogging on wordpress) they say there’s nothing they can do. It sucks, but at this point I’m just trying to pick up the pieces and move on.
I am blogging on both sites for now, trying to ask people on my old blog to move over to the new one, but they don’t seem to be paying much attention.
